Salla In the middle of Autumn

In paid collaboration Salla in the middle of Nowhere, Rethinking North.

Salla is a peaceful place where you can go wandering in old forests, exploring the wilderness or canoeing in a pristine lake. It’s literally in the middle of nowhere.

Salla is located close to my home so it has become familiar over the past years. I often find myself making an Autumn trip here as the season is so photogenic. It’s good to take your time and stay a little longer here as the area has so much to offer.

The Arctic beauty is not only present during winter even most people visit this place then. Misty mornings and open lakes with old forests and fells are creating a unique landscape for those seeking something special.

Salla area has a lot of different options for landscape photography. For photography this is a dream destination.

One of my recent favorites is this Onkamo area with magnificent view to lake Onkamo and several fells. In early Autumn the sunrise and sunsets are coming from the side of the view creating a perfect light conditions towards the lake.

Salla has many other scenic view points as well. Some of them you need to hike, like Pieni Pyhätunturi fell or the entire area of Naruska and Tuntsa. Over there my favourite shorter walks are Kullaoja waterfall and Karhutunturi fell.

Easier landscape views can be found anywhere and when the weather is right there are nice photo opportunities.

This place called Kaunisharju is one of those. Salla area has built a really nice shelter to the view point where you can have a breakfast, lunch break or just stay a while and enjoy the view.

While admiring the beauty of Autumn in Salla there are several activities that are nice to do this time of the year. My favorite activities are canoeing and hiking.

For canoeing lake Ruuhijärvi is great. It’s not that big so it’s often quite calm. It also has a beautiful view towards fell Ruuhitunturi.

Canoe rental here is easy. You can rent them from Salla Wilderness Park and the canoes are ready at the lake.

Salla Wilderness park offers a lot of other activities and accommodation. You can also just rent a traditional sauna experience from them and see reindeer passing by while you are cooling off from sauna.

For accommodation the are has a lot of comfy options like Sallatunturin Tuvat or Salla Wilderness Park. There is also a really nice caravan area Erittäin Sallainen where you can stay directly at the lakeside and take a benefit on their facilities. They also rent a caravan car for longer trips.

After a long day in the nature I am often craving for something good to eat. There is a nice restaurant called Kiela located in Sallatunturin Tuvat. They often have local fish in their menu that is delicious.

Restaurant Kiela offers a friendly service and cozy athmosphere.

When visiting Salla area I think it’s good to explore the surroundings and services with time.

It’s always a better idea for a traveller and for the planet to stay longer in one place and travel slowly.

Overall, Salla in Finland is a destination for those who wish to escape the hustle and immerse themselves with the Arctic wilderness.
