Salla in the middle of Nowhere

*This blog post is a collaboration with Salla in the middle of Nowhere and part of Korona Exit- project.

Salla is located in Eastern part of Lapland and especially the Northern parts of this are one of the most untouched places in Finland. Salla has great outdoor possibilities and services near Sallatunturi resort and you can easily enjoy these views with just a day hike up the fells.

We live about 1 hour away from here but I still find new places and things to do every time I come here. There are endless possibilities for off-track skiing and showshoeing but now I want to introduce some of my new favourite on-track activities.

Hike to Sallatunturi.

Hike to Sallatunturi.

1. Sallatunturi hike (Pyhätunturi) showshoeing trip

1,9 km one way / 1 hour

Sightseeing tower

Views towards the future National Park

This track is fairly easy to go with snowshoes or even without if you plan on staying on tracks. If you want to explore the area better I suggest to take the snowshoes or even off-track skis and make your own way up. The view from here is very unique as there are not that much built environment around. On the way up the snow covered trees are looking like you are walking in a different world and if it’s a clear day the sky is most likely giving the best possible tones that Lapland can give.

So I give a strong recommendation for this tour. When we went it was a sunny day and so incredibly beautiful that I can’t wait to go back.

The starting point is located east from Sallatunturi here: PARKING Itärinteentie

Here are some images from the route to give you an idea how beautiful the place is!

2. Kaunisharju view point

This place is a design view point next to the road and anyone is welcome to stop here for a moment to enjoy views. It’s an open building but it helps to block the wind.

You can stop here anytime and there are no opening hours. You can even come here at night and watch the night sky. Note: There is a skiing track with lights underneath the view point so the visibility for northern lights is not the best but you can still see them if they are strong. Lights are on until 8pm so after that it’s better to go see the night sky.

Milkyway can be observed from here too.

3. Kaunisharju skiing track / dogs allowed

PARKING here next to Poropuisto parking.

More information in Finnish: HERE

This track is total 12 km long but you can easily to make a shorter route.

Dogs are allowed here.

This track is definitely my kind of skiing track. There are some steeper up and downhills but not that much and at least for me it was a pleasant way. I didn’t go the entire track at this time as I started from Poropuisto and went around 5 km route.

There are several nice fire places in Salla skiing tracks so it’s good to get a skiing track map before you go.

Enjoy!
